Growing with your gutter waste.

Updated: Mar 19, 2023

Composting your gutter waste is a great way to reduce waste and help the environment.

At FRFG we have been working with a local and wonderful community allotment.

We have been collecting leaves, twigs, and other organic debris from your gutters that can be composted to create nutrient-rich soil for local family's and children to grow their very own fruit and vegetables, using the leaves and other organic debris collected from your gutters as mulch to retain moisture in the soil, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

The community allotment is a great place to bring people together, promote healthy living, and create a sustainable and vibrant community for local family's.

Teaching kids to grow vegetables is a fun and rewarding activity that can help them develop a lifelong love for gardening and healthy eating.

It's a fun and enjoyable experience for kids, it's been made as engaging as possible. Letting them get their hands dirty, using kid-sized tools, and getting to keep and cook what they grow.

They learn to understand the basics of plant care, such as watering, fertilizing, and weeding. Encourage them to observe the plants and notice changes as they grow.

The kids appreciate the fruits of their labour and develop a taste for fresh, healthy foods.

Kids harvesting vegetables can be a wonderful and educational experience for them. It not only helps them learn about where their food comes from, but also teaches them valuable life skills such as hard work, responsibility, and patience.

Overall, teaching kids to grow vegetables is a fun and educational activity that can help them develop important skills and habits.

There are several reasons why you should have your gutters cleaned regularly:

To prevent water damage: Clogged gutters can cause water to overflow and seep into your home's walls, causing water damage and potential mould growth. Regular cleaning can prevent this issue.

Protect your roof: Clogged gutters can cause water to back up onto your roof, which can damage the fascia, rafters and other components of your roof.

Avoid pest problems: Clogged gutters provide an ideal breeding ground for insects, rodents, and other pests that can make their way into your home. Regular cleaning can prevent this from happening.

Maintain structural integrity: Over time, clogged gutters can cause water damage to your home's foundation, leading to expensive repairs.

Extra weight: Extra weight in gutters can be a problem for a few reasons. First and foremost, it can cause damage to the gutter system itself. Gutters are designed to direct rainwater away from your home, and they're typically made of lightweight materials like aluminium or PVC When extra weight is added to the gutters, it can cause them to sag or pull away from the roofline, which can lead to leaks and other problems.

Save money in the long run: By having your gutters cleaned regularly, you can prevent costly repairs to your home caused by water damage, pest infestations, and other issues.

Overall, having your gutters cleaned regularly is an important part of home maintenance that can help prevent damage and keep your home in good condition.
